2012 “Soil to Spoon” Poster Contest Winners

The Gasconade County Soil & Water Conservation District (GCSWCD) is pleased to announce the winners of their 2012 Poster Contest, “Soil to Spoon”. This year’s theme emphasized the importance of our soil in regards to our food. We had 7 schools participate this year with 580 posters being submitted. Our judges Shirley Landwehr, Connie Doerr, and Sharon Mace spent 5 hours sorting through the posters and making very difficult decisions. Twenty-one winners were selected from the 7 grade levels that participated.
The Board hosted an awards reception on March 23rd at the Owensville Middle School. GCSWCD Vice-Chairman Dennis Berger and District Manager Diana Mayfield presented the awards, while NRCS District Conservationist Melinda Barch was on hand for taking pictures. There were a total of 70 people in attendance for this event.
The first, second, and third place winners all received a cash award along with certificates and ribbons recognizing their accomplishments. These Winners were:

o Emily McKinney, Owensville Elementary School
o Zoe Schafer, Hermann Elementary School

o Brianna Thomas, St. George School
o Charity Reynolds, Hermann Middle School
o Allison Stiers, St. George School
o Brenna Jones, St. George School
o Hannah Bader, St. George School
o Calista LeBrell, St. George School
o Madison Bader, St. George School
o Haley Hingst, Hermann Middle School
o Morgan LaBoube, St. George School
o Taylor Ahring, Owensville Middle School

From the 1st place winners, three students were selected to go on to the State Competition, which will be held on November 26-28. If these students are selected for a State Award, they will be invited to Tan-Tar-A for a banquet and awards presentation. Their poster will then be sent on to the national level. The following students were selected as our state entries:
2-3rd Grade Division – Grace Godat, St. George School
4-6th Grade Division – Allison Stiers, St. George School
7-8th Grade Division – Daniell Sarnowski, Hermann Middle School
The Grand prize winner of the bicycle was Grace Godat, St. George School.
All participants of this contest received a ribbon of distinction as a participation award. The grand prize bicycle was donated by Wal-marts and the poster board was donated by RR Donnelly. Thank you! Pictures from the reception may be viewed on our website at www.swcd.mo.gov/gasconade.
